Creative Thinking: Exercise 10

Solve these problems as creatively as possible.

Section 10A

  1. If the person in the baker's shop is a baker, the person selling flowers is a florist, the person working at the cash counter is a cashier, what is the policeman outside the bank called?

  2. What is the best way to eat roti canai?

  3. How much soil is there in a hole measuring two feet in diameter and one foot deep?

Section 10B

  1. How much dirt would be in a hole 6 feet deep and 6 feet wide that has been dug with a square edged shovel?

  2. A woman was near death from cancer. One drug might save her. However, the cost of the drug was very high. The husband could not afford the price of the drug. He tried borrowing the money from family and friends, but managed to raise only half the amount. He even went to see the pharmacy’s owner to bargain for a cheaper price or to be able to pay the amount later but was refused. In desperation, he broke into the pharmacy and stole the drug. Should he have done that? Why?

  3. Amelia was born and brought up in a middle class suburb of Kuala Lumpur. Her family was quite rich but she had an unhappy childhood. There was always tension in the house and Amelia often felt neglected. One day she made friends with a boy in a shopping mall. After going out with him for several weeks, she was persuaded to try the drugs that everyone seems to be taking. One night when she and some friends were high on drugs, the house they were in, was raided by the police. She was arrested by the police and was awaiting trial. If you were the judge in charge of Amelia’s case, what would you do with her? Why?
